Water boarding, wake surfing and waterskiing in Provo

If you enjoy waterskiing, wakeboarding, or wake surfing and wondered if there is any way to do this in the Provinciales area, there sure is!  Although Grace Bay doesn’t allow any of the above, one outlet (Nautique Sports) has a great selection of top of the line Mastercraft boats and excellent instructors to facilitate your urge to ski, board or surf!

There are always spots on the island where there is excellent conditions for skiing etc, so don’t worry if you see waves off your hotel as the island is pretty small and your guides can easily find a place with the water conditions perfect for towable water sports in the Turks and Caicos.

So while on Provo…take advantage of the opportunity to get out on the water and have some fun.

Inside the Turks & Caicos

The beautiful islands of the Turks and Caicos are just east of the Bahamas and north of the Dominican Republic and Haiti. Although its neighbors are in Caribbean waters, Turks and Caicos actually calls the Atlantic Ocean home. But, don’t worry, its islands offer the best of the Caribbean, like one of the longest coral reefs in the world, 230 miles of white sandy beaches and crystal clear waters. With temperatures ranging between 80 and 95ºF throughout the seasons, Turks and Caicos is a year-round destination, although hurricane season (July to October) can bring severe weather.

Turks and Caicos is comprised of eight major islands: Salt Cay, Grand Turk, South Caicos, East Caicos, Middle Caicos, North Caicos, West Caicos and Providenciales (nicknamed “Provo”). The islands are relatively flat but, depending on the island, the terrain varies from sand dunes to lush green vegetation.

The people on the islands are known for their friendliness, although East Caicos and West Caicos are uninhabited. Whichever island you choose, you’ll be far from the madding crowd, amid tranquility instead of glitz.

Providenciales: An Introduction

Providenciales is the urban centre of the Turks & Caicos Islands. Familiarly known as “Provo,” the island offers all the modern conveniences one could desire while remaining a superior vacation destination for one who wants an escape from stress and overpopulated cities. Provo has an 18 hole golf course, shopping centres, three marinas, a growing number of of bars and excellent restaurants. Provo is also a divers’ and water lovers’ paradise.

Beautiful beaches are scattered on all sides of Providenciales, the most spectacular of which is a 12 mile stretch located on Grace Bay, which is protected by a healthy barrier reef.

Situated on the west side of the Caicos archipelago, Providenciales has an area of 38 square miles. Prior to 1960, the island had a population of 500. Today, it has the largest population and contains the largest native and nonnative population in Turks & Caicos. Development of Providenciales began in 1966 when the Turks and Caicos Government and the British Government made a lease-purchase agreement with Provident Ltd. allowing them to lease 4000 acres of Crown Land.

The south part of the island faces the Caicos Bank. The Caicos Bank is a shallow, pale turquoise sea and is partly composed of swamp and tidal flats, filled with an abundant resource of conch and lobster.

Natural island formations offer safe mooring for sailors. Sapodilla Bay is a popular mooring for yachts traveling through the Turks and Caicos Islands. On the opposite end of Providenciales, the deep channel of Leeward Going Through makes a natural and safe harbour on the northeast end of the island.

Historical points of interest include the Cheshire Hall and Richmond Hill Plantation ruins. Stones engraved by shipwrecked sailors are found on a hill overlooking Sapodilla Bay.

The “Hole” at Long Bay is a deep and wide limestone chimney with a mysterious depth of salt water at the bottom.

Provo is home to the only Conch farm in the world. These mollusks with their beautiful pink shells take five years to grow to their adult size. The Conch farm is open for tours during the winter months.

The Tiki Hut village at Northwest Point is another sight to see. Years ago, these Tiki Huts were built for a French gameshow but have since been removed. This is one of the most beautiful beach on the island.

Providenciales: Culture

The English speaking population of 19,500 are dispersed over the eight main islands, the native people are descendants from African slaves who were originally brought over to grow cotton on the island of Providenciales. The natives are very kind and friendly people and are also very religious. The “expat” community of British, American, French, Canadian and Scandinavian gives the islands some European influence. The people of the islands have a very relaxed attitude that helps to create a perfect environment for you to unwind.

Providenciales: The Performing Arts

The islands are known for a style of music called ripsaw, a genre in which a handsaw is the primary instrument, often accompanied by guitar, accordion, drums and other percussion. Though the style has its roots going all the way back to the days of the slave trade, ripsaw music can still be heard all around Providenciales—and its influence can still be heard in some of the island’s most popular musical acts. One of the best loved modern musical pioneers is Lovey Forbes, who created a totally new genre, “combina,” that marries traditional ripsaw and contemporary foreign styles.Forbes and other local acts (also popular around the island are reggae, calypso and soca) can be heard in the annual Turks & Caicos Music and Cultural Festival alongside international headliners—the 2006 Festival, July 31 through August 7, features Ludacris and Fantasia, among others.

Two other performance venues are the Williams Auditorium, located on South Dock Rd. and home to events like The Cactus Slam Festival, and Brayton Hall off Leeward Highway, which often hosts events and shows sponsored by the Turks & Caicos Friends of the Arts Foundation.
